After eight years in the rempeyek making business, Social Development Department (Kemas) teacher Rahmah Salleh, together with three residents of Kampung Sri Kenangan, now have their hands full keeping up with orders for their traditional kueh.
Using a recipe from Rahmah’s own family, the rempeyek they produced, under the brand name ‘Safiya Enterprise’, is gaining popularity and much sought-after in Terengganu.
The rempeyek by Safiya Enterprise is produced manually using the traditional way, a constraint, according to Rahmah, for them to meet the high demand.
Our monthly production is limited to only 1,500 packets, each weighing 250 grammes, of rempeyek, for distribution to nearby supermarkets and retail outlets, she added.
Rahmah said they were able to earn about RM4,000 a month from the sale of the rempeyek, which has either dhal, green peas, groundnuts or anchovies, for the topping.
“The rempeyek making started as a project by Kemas to improve the economy of residents in the village, and after sometime, our rempeyek became popular as more people like it, including the Sultanah of Terengganu, Sultanah Nur Zahirah.
“The Sultanah tasted our rempeyek at a programme with the people sometime ago, and since then I have been receiving orders from the palace,” she told Reporterd on Sunday.
Now that there is higher demand for the Safiya Enterprise rempeyek, Rahmah said she and her colleagues planned to get assistance from the Agriculture Department and relevant agencies to enable them to increase production.
During the festive season, the orders for the rempeyek increased by five-folds, she added.
Currently, she said, they operated at the Kemas premise.
