The Terengganu government is to build 320 houses to be given free to 10 hardcore poor families in each of the 32 state constituencies in the state beginning next year. Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman said today the terrace houses would be built under the Hardcore Poor Housing Project under a state government initiative to enable the poor to own houses despite having no land.
“I have asked the elected representatives to identify a suitable site, of three or four hectares, for this special settlement for the hardcore poor. The budget for building one such house is RM40,000,” he said.
“We will build the houses under a new concept. The houses will be more comfortable and the settlement will have infrastructure such as a playground, surau and such,” he told reporters after handing over the keys to affordable houses in Batu Hampar, Manir, here.
Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari, State Assembly speaker Datuk Mohd Zubir Embong and state financial officer Datuk Osman Muda were also present at the event.
A total of 172 people received the keys to the affordable houses built under the first phase at a cost of RM68,000 per unit.
Ahmad Razif said the state government would build 10,000 more affordable houses next year after all the existing affordable houses had been handed over by the end of this year.
“About 2,000 completed affordable houses at eight locations in the state have yet to be handed over to the people.
“I will also instruct the Terengganu State Economic Development Corporation (PMINT) to list the eligible applicants who have yet to obtain the houses for consideration in the future,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Razif said from next year, the state government would be channelling allocations of RM 1 million each for the 15 state constituencies not under the control of the Barisan Nasional.
He said BN leaders in the constituencies must ensure that that the money was used for the welfare of the people.
